Content notes: Violence; past child abuse; allusions to LoK, currently avoiding being jossed by the skin of its teeth. More detailed tags etc at AO3.

Summary:

Toph gets to rescue a princess, but Azula isn't exactly what you'd call grateful. For one thing, being held captive by vengeful earthbenders has rekindled the problems she hoped were left in the past. For another thing, she's uncomfortably drawn to Toph, the only woman in the world who can match Azula for power and arrogance. With the tenth anniversary of the Avatar's return nearing, Toph and Azula find themselves fighting to prevent another war.

This is the first third of the story! The second third is being edited, the final scenes are being ... well, scratched at. They would have been done last weekend, only I found myself mysteriously unable to write, which may or may not have been related to the emergency gall bladder removal I had to have on Tuesday.

Management recommends viewing the full work for a more satisfying reading experience!

-- yes, Korra discussion, fanworks etc are absolutely welcomed and encouraged here. I've updated the profile to reflect that and will populate tags, interests etc as we go along (by which I mean when I've had a chance to watch the episodes - bad fan alert! /o\)

-- you're all doing beautifully with cutting for spoilers, so keep up the good work there, but do remember that this includes icon choices when making posts, and that although it's now airing in the US not all of us can keep up with it so quickly (sob).

-- by request, we'll put up posts weekly where you can discuss the most recent episode/link to reaction posts etc. A belated one for the first two episodes will go up shortly.

Gender Balance in Avatar: The Last Airbender, or, Why I Like The Great Divide

Avatar: The Last Airbender is, quite possibly, my favorite show of all time. I love its magic, I love its worldbuilding, and I love its characters, each of whom come across as a real human being, with distinct flaws, strengths, and motivations. I love, most of all, the variety of its female characters. This is not a show where one Strong Female Character has to stand in for her entire gender. Over the course of three seasons, we see many women--some good, some misguided, some indifferent, some evil--showing many different ways to have and use agency.

And yes, I'm saying a lot of nice things about it because I'm about to rip one aspect to shreds.

I'm far from the first person to praise the show's female leads. There's even a "Women of Avatar" DVD extra where a bunch of fans talk about how much they mean to them. Katara, Toph, Azula, Suki, Mai, Ty Lee, Yue--there's someone for everyone, regardless of preference. The problem is, what happens when you look beyond the leads?

(The world of Avatar is, to all appearances, one dominated entirely by men.)
