I play a lot of video games like this (math? pah! The computer does it for me!), so came at it from that direction. Any fictional people that hang out with me get exposed to video games a lot, and Azula has taken an Interest in Dynasty Warriors and Disgaea. (She commands me to stop sucking at them. Doesn't work that way, Your Highness :D). This story started as an attempt to combine them in an Avatarverse sort of way.
