Korra Discussion Post: 'Welcome to Republic City'/'A Leaf in the Wind'

This is a post where you can discuss the most recent episodes and link to your own reaction posts. What do you make of Legend of Korra so far?

Likely spoilers for 1x01 & 1x02 below.

I'm trying to write things other than "Korra's SO HOT" but it's just not coming.

...

...

KORRA'S SO HOT

Thus far? It is my favorite thing ever in the history of ever. LOVE KORRA SO MUCH!!!!!!

I've seen a lot of people compare Mako and Zuko, and I really don't think they're at all alike... but I will say, when Mako says "You're supposed to knock him out the back, not over the side!", his voice sounds just like Zuko. It's creepy. I'm convinced Dante Basco came in to read that one line.

Also, if you haven't read Racebending.com's watch-along, you really should.
talibusorabat: A young cartoon woman gets ready to fight with fire (Avatar: Korra feel the fire)

AGREED

[personal profile] talibusorabat 2012-04-16 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's no wonder fire is her favorite element to fight with.

YES. THIS. PRECISELY THIS.

That was an excellent write-up over at Racebending! Going to throw my two cents into the pile and rec it as well. :)

I thought it was really interesting how they compared the assimilation of waterbending and earthbending into a privileged bending class to the assimilation of different peoples into "whiteness." It was something I never thought about before, but it makes a lot of sense.

I'm not as concerned with Equalists being the "bad guys," though, because I really don't think Amon is a genuine Equalist. I think he co-opted the growing Equalist movement in order to make his own bid for power/achieve his own nefarious ends.

I also don't really see the Equalist who preached in the square as particularly manipulative? At least, no more so than anyone trying to make a persuasive argument. I mean, he wasn't giving a doctoral thesis with footnotes on how benders were oppressing non-benders, but his arguments still had merit. Korra's kneejerk instinct was to use bending to make her point; the Triple Threat Triad used their bending to terrorize a neighborhood, and if you look at all the people currently in positions of power (that we know of), they're benders. Let's cut soapbox guy some slack.

I agree, though I'm waiting to see what this huge secret is for the next episode (when Amon shows up). I have this little idea at the back of my mind that makes me wonder if he is actually a bender himself or was a bender who did Very Bad Things or threatened to and had his bending taken away from him (a la Ozai), however, I realize that's a huuuuuuuuuge leap. Though I do wonder if Aang ever took anyone else's bending away in aftermath of the war.

Korra's kneejerk instinct was to use bending to make her point; the Triple Threat Triad used their bending to terrorize a neighborhood, and if you look at all the people currently in positions of power (that we know of), they're benders. Let's cut soapbox guy some slack.

Agreed again, and I think one of the big hurdles and lessons for this series will be about the temptation for using bending to solve all problems, and how to find the proper balance between benders and non-benders. It'll be interesting if this new group of characters picks up a non-bender to join in their adventures along the way who proves even without bending you can still kick ass and make a difference (like Sokka).

Oooooh, THAT'S an Amon theory I haven't heard! I like it!

....I seriously doubt it will go this route, but it could be interesting if Amon was one of the Avatar candidates that the White Lotus investigated (if only because I love huge plot points that come from throwaway lines)

There is an upcoming character who will be the group's resident non-bender, if I understand my spoilers correctly. :)

A part of me kind of wants Korra's/the series' arc to be a rejection of the "lone savior" idea. Teamwork was a huge part of the original series, but everything still hinged on Aang and Aang alone Being the Avatar and Saving the World. I'm not sure how something like that would even play out, though.

Also, can we get some love in here for Chief Bei Fong's scars?

LADY. WITH FACIAL SCARS. Is that rare, or have I just been hiding under some no-lady-scars rock?

Amazing series is amazing thus far. FOREVER SOBBING OVER KATARA. I just felt so fucking bad for her, everyone she loves is gone, in one way or another. :(

Mako bores me so far. Bolin's where it's at.

IT IS RARE, AND SHE IS GREAT. I love her. *___________* She has so much of Toph's attitude, but she channels it into YOU WILL FOLLOW THE RULES OR ELSE! I'm dying to learn more about her.

YES! She is definitely a student of the Toph Bei Fong school of badass, but not a clone.

I kind of hope who her father is becomes this series' "What happened to Zuko's mom?" Just for the delicious trolling.

Mako reminds me much, much more of Mai than Zuko, which is probably why I like him already.

shhhhh you did not see the wrong journal nope

HAHAHAA. Though I don't know, he's not really bored with the world like she was/affected to be. He's more no-nonsense than anything else. "Sorry, no time for shenanigans, I must FIND THE AVATAR WIN THE PROBENDING TOURNAMENT."

...I could see him as their kid, though, if kids were guaranteed to have a mixture of their parents' personalities. xD

Is it wrong to say that Korra has one sexy, sexy mother? (And dad, too, but come on, MOM.)

I'm convinced her parents discovered the fountain of eternal youth. They didn't age a day in the 10+ years between "i'M THE AVATAR AND YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH IT" and her heading off to Republic City.

Oh, definitely not the SAME as Mai--just more like Mai than Zuko, I think, if one's making comparisons. I like how none of the characters so far are rehashes of ATLA characters!

My headcanon for Lin's dad: Toph shows up on Kyoshi Island after 10 years of wandering the lands, asks Suki if she can "borrow" Sokka for a weekend. Suki thinks it over and decides she's basically cool with it as long as Sokka's returned intact.

The rest is history.

Personally, I think Lin was either born from Toph's pure willpower (because Toph is so awesome she needs no one's help in creating life!) or from some kind of complicated process where she has more than two parents, like Gilgamesh only instead of being part god she's part Toph.
