A Theory Concerning the Flashbacks

birdbrainblue on Tumblr has an interesting theory regarding the flashbacks we see in Legend of Korra as of the latest episode, "When Extremes Meet"; you can read it here. Obviously, big honking spoilers!

Oh RIGHT, that is why faceblind ol' me was going "but why is Tarlok in these flashbacks he's not that old surely"!!

Oooh, though hold on, I'm not totally sold on this: Tarrlok is actively encouraging the Equalist movement (incl arresting known innocents, the ridiculous curfew, trying to let the escaped Equalists get away). While I'll happily go with the father-son theory, I'm less convinced by "Amon is his beserk button": I think Amon is a bender, and think I consider it rather more likely that Amon & Tarrlok have teamed up to ~grab power~ (or so thinks Tarrlok), and remove bending from those that he has a grudge against (i.e. the Avatar, probably Tenzin).

haha, yeah, I'm somewhat faceblind as well, and while I could recognize Sokka and Toph, I kept wondering if we were supposed to know who the other guy is. But now that it's pointed out ...
